Each Thursday night Jan and Rhonda conduct a 'Trivia Night' at the clubhouse, starting at 7pm.

Trivia is a type of game in which players (who can play individually or in a team) are asked questions about different topics and they have to get as many correct answers as possible. Trivia contests are usually organized as part of events, parties and as pub entertainment. Normally contestants are organized in teams and the team who gets the higher score wins.

Why you should play Trivia

Besides having the benefit of improving and expanding your knowledge, either general or in more specific areas, this style of game is designed so that the contestants have fun playing, and its main objective is to create discussion and healthy debate among participants. In fact it is not mandatory that Trivia winners have to get a prize and almost everyone is ok with that as their main objective is to have fun and learn at the same time.

Trivia questions and answers can be adapted to any audience and can be used in schools and universities to assist in language skills development and to test knowledge and skills levels.

The benefits of playing trivia and quiz games are proven and tested and some of them are:

  • Expanding players’ general knowledge.
  • Helping players to get to know how to work in teams
  • Assisting in the process of working on computers
  • It is fun, challenging and competitive at the same time.
  • Creating healthy debate among players.
  • Helping relieve the stress of daily work routine.
  • Promote group harmony (either within organizations, schools, or just a group of friends)
  • Make new friends

Benefits of playing trivia and quiz games

Unfortunately every year we grow a bit older and we realize that our mind is not as sharp and fast as it used to be. If we don’t train our brain, it gets harder for us to remember, concentrate and learn new skills and information.

Quiz questions can help prevent this process to go so fast as it serves as a form of exercise for our brain.

Improve our knowledge

Although our learning capabilities deteriorates over time, it is possible to keep our brain trained and in shape, so that we are able to better retain information. Answering trivia questions helps us to improve and expand our knowledge without us noticing. Just by playing we can learn and memorize new information, while increasing our ability to focus at the same time.

Fluid Intelligence

It is is the capacity to think logically and solve problems in novel situations. Our brain is a true engineering machine that is able to adapt to many situations, including learning and creating new neural connections to accommodate new information. When answering trivia questions our brain adapts to the game, the more questions we answer, the more we want to keep playing. By doing that, we make our brain operate and become more clever and quick to respond.

Reduces cortisol levels

Quizzes can also be very helpful to help reduce our cortisol levels (stress hormone) and as a result it enhances our focus, learning and thinking abilities.

Cross Training

Trivia questions can touch a variety of topics such as health, history, sports, geography or science. Any topic you can imagine is acceptable. I even played a star wars trivia once! Because we are thinking about different topics at the same time, our mind has to work hard to have the ability, memory and logic needed to handle all these topics at once. This is called "cross-training", which means that when we "study" different topics at the same time, we remember them better than if we would learn them separately. Our brain is that special.

Happiness and emotions

Answering trivia questions (and especially answering them correctly) can make us very happy. Friendly competitiveness can enhance our mood, increase our ego and make us feel good in general. When we win we experience a sense of satisfaction and we release hormones that make our brain feel good. So, if you still haven’t experimented with quizzes it may be a good idea to organize a quiz night with your friends, family, or perhaps a pub quiz (link to how to organize a quiz night ) where you can meet different people making it even more challenging. Apart from having fun and learn new things, you will be making your brain more powerful!
